A woman who was screaming ‘Defund the police’ and swinging a baseball bat outside the Capitol on Friday has been arrested, photos from the scuffle show.
She was detained by law enforcement while climate protesters swarmed the White House on the final day of a week-long program of anti-fossil fuel demonstrations.
The woman, identified as Olivia Romano, 25, ‘appeared agitated’ at around 9:30 a.m. when police approached her.
‘The woman, who was not cooperative, started yelling at our officers,’ Capitol police told DailyMail.com.
Romano apparently bit one a Capitol cop as they tried to take the bat from her.
The statement from Capitol police describes her attacking officers.
‘When she raised the bat, the officers attempted to take it. In that moment, the woman became combative and bit one of the officers,’ law enforcement said.
Capitol police identified the woman as 25-year-old Olivia Romano, but couldn’t confirm whether she came to DC for the protest
Police placed a covering over her head after she bit an officer during a scuffle with law enforcement
Romano could still be heard speaking and screaming as police carried her away restrained to a stretcher
Cops also confiscated the bat she was swinging at them after they managed to snatch it away during the confrontation
Charges against the 25-year-old are pending. Police haven’t yet identified a motive for the attack.
Police told DailyMail.com that 78 people were arrested today for ‘crowding, obstructing or incommoding.’
Three of those people are also being charged with assaulting a police officer.
Photos taken on Friday show Romano lying on the ground looking dazed as officers pin her down and forcibly restrain her on the west side of the Capitol.
Another photo shows her being taken away in a stretcher with her arms behind her back and a plastic hood on her head.
She was arrested on the last day of demonstrations called People vs. Fossil Fuels.
Hundreds of protesters descended on the streets of DC this week demanding that President Biden halt all future fossil fuel projects and declares a national climate emergency just weeks before the United Nations’ scheduled climate summit.
The five-day event was organized by a coalition of environmental, indigenous and civil rights groups known as Build Back Fossil Free.
The protests are being led mostly by Indigenous leaders from across the country, many of whom have been pushing for months to get Biden to kill the Dakota Access pipeline and the Line 3 pipeline that would cross into the US from Canada.
A Twitter account appearing to belong to a ‘Liv Romano’ has a post about today’s protest.

‘Today’s the day. Headed to #WashingtonDC to protect our Indigenous Water Protectors & allies being illegally arrested by @POTUS @JoeBiden Secret Service for peacefully protesting. This s**t cannot stand. We The People are taking back our power,’ @liv_romano wrote on the social media site this morning.
An accompanying photo shows a woman with similar features to Romano making a peace sign with a hand that was also wrapped around the handle of a baseball bat.
The Twitter bio claims she’s a co-chair of the Maryland Green Party.
Past election records show a ‘Liv Romano’ unsuccessfully running for the Maryland House of Delegates in 2018.

Protesters can be seen being forced into paddy wagons and having verbal confrontations with cops.
On Monday, when the demonstrations first began, hundreds of people called on Biden to fulfill his climate promises.
Protesters defaced a statue of Andrew Jackson just outside the White House, writing ‘Expect Us’ in bright red letters.
Biden was not at the White House at the time. Instead he was topping off a family weekend in Delaware by attending his nephew Cuffe Owens’ wedding to Real Housewives star Meghan King. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden also accompanied him to the swanky event.
