Suspended footballer Greenwood faces year-long wait for attempted rape trial as date set

Footballer Mason Greenwood has been re-bailed after appearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester The Manchester United footballer is accused of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour with all three charges relating to the same woman. Greenwood did not enter any pleas during the hearing.

The player, who has been capped once for England, was first held in January over allegations after images and videos were posted on social media.

He was released on bail but arrested in October for an alleged breach of conditions, and granted bail a few days later.

The controlling and coercive behaviour charge relates to a period between November 2018 and October this year, where Greenwood is alleged to have made threatening and derogatory comments towards the complainant, as well as accessing and monitoring her social media accounts.

The charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of the year, Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

Following the accusations, Nike suspended and then terminated its sponsorship deal with the footballer.

Electronic Arts also confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.

Greenwood has been re-bailed until a hearing on February 10 next year, with a trial date set for November 27 2023.
