Sophia Bush writes about the complex history of Thanksgiving while sharing hopes for a more ‘inclusive’ world

Sophia Bush penned a thought-provoking statement about the complex history of Thanksgiving while explaining how she celebrates the occasion.

While she still partakes in gathering with loved ones around the holiday, the performer expressed wanting to be a part of a more ‘inclusive’ world with ‘better traditions’ that are ‘bound by honor and honesty.’

‘My friend family started celebrating our thanks the Saturday before America’s calendared holiday. It allowed for a gathering of us, our families, the families being built, and space to dream up something new,’ the 39-year-old actress captioned the slideshow.

She continued: ‘When I consider the origins of today’s (Thanksgiving on 2021 is 11/25) holiday, it’s complex. ‘It comes with pain felt for hundreds of years by the only true people of this land (the rest of us are immigrants, by choice or by force).’

‘It comes with, in 1863, Lincoln proclaiming this day as a national day of thanks during the Civil War — which he commemorated at the Gettysburg address — that called for this nation to be one of “Liberty … dedicated to the proposition on that all [humans] are created equal,” the One Tree Hill alum explained.

While reflecting on Thanksgiving, Bush spoke about how the day ‘like many other days and like each us individual humans’ is ‘is built on pain, and hope, and abject failure, and the dream of utmost potential.’

‘I know there are places we can go, to honor more, love harder, see more truthfully, and be more whole,’ she added. ‘I hope that can be the spirit of a practice of gratitude.’

The star concluded that she wishes the thankful mindset can ‘supersede the day, and perhaps become a season.’

‘I hope we can build better traditions, which are bound by honor and honesty. Isn’t that goal? To get bigger and better and more tender and more inclusive and more true?’ she concluded. ‘And most of all, I love you. Happy Gratitude Season.’
