Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is slated to become the highest-grossing movie of the coronavirus pandemic this Friday.

In doing so it will overtake its fellow Marvel superhero movie Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, according to a report in Deadline.

Black Widow was released in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously – prompting Scarlett to sue Disney – while Shang-Chi came out exclusively in theaters.

By Wednesday of this week Black Widow had earned $183.4 million domestically while Shang-Chi had made $181.8 million, Box Office Mojo reports.

Shang-Chi had sailed ahead to $183.2 million by this Thursday and now Deadline have predicted it will surpass Black Widow by Friday.

Last week it emerged that Disney would be sticking to an exclusively theatrical release for a minimum of 45 days on the rest of its slate for this year.

Apparently this decision was influenced by how well Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings has done financially in theaters alone.

Scarlett sued Disney for breach of contract at the end of July over the simultaneous theatrical and streaming release of Black Widow.

Her lawyers argued that the decision cut significantly into the backend profit she would otherwise have made.

Disney retaliated by accusing her of ‘callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic’ and revealing her salary was $20 million.

Their legal filing insists that they met their contractual obligation to a wide theatrical release and argues: ‘There is nothing in the agreement requiring that a “wide theatrical release” also be an “exclusive” theatrical release.’

Since the legal wrangling began Disney have also attempted to shift the issue into private arbitration while Scarlett’s team argued for an open court case.

Meanwhile Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings got an exclusive theatrical release on September 3 and will debut on Disney+ on November 12.
