NBC U-turn on Meghan announcement labelled 'embarrassing' – 'Didn't get the memo'

Anticipant royal watchers have labelled an NBC U-turn “embarrassing” – after Meghan Markle was wrongly revealed to be a guest of chat show host Jimmy Fallon. News of the Duchess appearing on The Tonight Show broke on Monday evening, with a now deleted link to NBC’S official website stating: “How to Watch Meghan Markle on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

It was said to have been scheduled for December 7 and would feature Meghan discussing her recent projects, including the Sussexes’ Netflix series.

But Omid Scobie, co-author of Finding Freedom, an unofficial biography about Meghan, 41, and Prince Harry, 37, soon poured cold water on the reported plan, joking “looks like someone at NBC didn’t get the memo!”

A representative of NBC clarified the situation soon after, commenting: “Earlier today, it was inaccurately reported that Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex would be appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 7.”

Since moving stateside, Harry and Meghan have appeared in a number of TV interviews, most famously with Oprah in March 2021. Harry was also interviewed by James Corden, while Meghan sat down with Ellen.

But royal watchers hoping for more insight from the California-based couple were left disappointed – and criticised NBC’s U-turn on social media.

Twitter user @kowalie_q said: “Wutt?! I got happy for nothing?! [sic]”

Another user, @thewhiskeymary, said: “Ohhh and I set the timer to record.”

User @things_royal, a fan account for Prince William, added: “Gosh! How embarrassing.

“NBC confirms THEY made a mistake announcing Meghan Markle would appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

Another user, @dbrown99944, said: “Good. Don’t like these announcements so way in advanced anyway.

“I think any upcoming appearance will be a surprise as well.”

Meghan previously cancelled an appearance on The Tonight Show, set for September 20, after Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8.

It comes after Meghan and Prince Harry paid tribute to Elton John via video during his Farewell Tour.

In a clip played at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, Meghan says: “We are just so proud of you. We’re so grateful that we were able to see you on your farewell tour also.”

Harry adds: “Thank you for being the friend that you were for my mum. Thank you for being our friend.

“Thank you for being friend to our kids and thank you for entertaining people right around the world.”
