Emily DiDonato has opened up about how her agents used to force her to spend ‘$10,000 a day’ on designer shopping sprees because they didn’t think she looked chic enough when she went to castings.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star shared the shocking story in a TikTok video this week, explaining that she was impressionable and would have done anything to succeed when she started modeling as a teen.

‘I used to spend $10,000 at a time shopping when I was like 17 years old,’ she recalled. ‘By the way, for the record, I would never do that now.’

Emily used the app’s greenscreen function to pull up her first-ever modeling Polaroid to show how she used to dress.

‘These are literally my prom shoes. This shirt is from Forever 21, and these are just like random shorts,’ she recalled. ‘I wasn’t stylish.’

Emily said that whenever she went to her agencies in Paris, they would chastise her for how she dressed, telling her she was ‘so not chic.’

‘I would be going to really big castings to like Chanel and meeting with Karl Lagerfeld and stuff like that,’ she explained. ‘They’d be like, “You cannot go to castings like that.”‘

She claimed her agents insisted on taking her shopping and would make her spend $10,000 a pop on head-to-toe designer outfits that were all black, including Fendi shoes and Chanel bags.

Looking back on it now, Emily said could have easily gotten away with wearing an outfit from Zara paired with a designer bag.

However, she noted that these shopping sprees took place in the early aughts, long before the rise of influencers, when ‘model street style was a thing.’

Emily recalled how the charges were put on her account through the agency, saying she didn’t think her mother’s credit card would have even covered them at the time.

‘I did not grow up with a lot of money at all,’ she stressed. ‘My dad was a New York City firefighter. My mom was a stay-at-home mom, so $10,000 was like all the money in the world [to me]. Just to make that clear.’

In a follow-up video, Emily pulled out some of the designer pieces she still has from her shopping sprees, including two Chanel bags that she bought on the same day

Emily also shared that her agents thought she was too American and encouraged her to ‘stop smiling so much’ and sleep less, so she’d have dark circles under her eyes.

‘I was trying to offset all that bubbly Americanness by wearing all black and all designer and trying not to sleep so I’d look tired, like what?’ she said.

The mother of one insisted that if her agents told her to do that now, she wouldn’t hesitate to tell them to ‘go pound sand.’

‘But I was just so young and so impressionable and I just really wanted to be successful,’ she explained. ‘I would have done anything it took to make that happen, so I was just like, “Okay.”

She started with a black leather Chanel bag that she still uses to this day and doesn’t seem to have any regrets about buying.

‘I do believe in investing in really good pieces you absolutely love, and I use this all the time,’ she said, right before she pulled out a smaller, nearly identical Chanel bag.

‘I actually purchased this one the same day I purchased the previous one,’ she admitted. ‘I couldn’t choose between the two, so I just bought both, which is literally insane and unhinged behavior that I would never do today.’

Emily then brought out her beloved Givenchy bowling ball bag that she carried all over the world when she was a young model.

‘I used this for my portfolio, for travel. This bag has been places. It has seen things. We have gone through stuff together,’ she recalled. ‘I recently saw a TikTok that said this bag is like out and uncool, which I disagree with.’

She noted that she doesn’t have a lot of clothes left from that time period because she hasn’t fit into those items in years.

‘I should have just hired a stylist, which is what I would do now,’ she said

Instead of keeping them in her closet, she donated them, gave them to friends and family, or sold them on designer resale sites.

However, Emily did share photos of the Alaïa skater dress that she had in almost every color and style back in 2013.

‘When I was a young model and I first started going to events, I didn’t feel comfortable in my body,’ she explained. ‘I didn’t have my sense of style down, so I literally wore the exact same style of dress to every single event for like years.’

Emily wore the frock in white, black, and red, all around the same time period.

‘I love this dress. It’s super flattering, and it’s great, but did I need to buy it in every single color to wear to every single event? No. I was like the definition of it ain’t broke, don’t fix it in this dress,’ she joked.

‘I should have just hired a stylist, which is what I would do now.’
