A rescue mission has been launched off the east coast of Scotland after a man fell off the side of an oil rig. A helicopter, an aeroplane, and two oil supply vessels form part of the search for the man who fell off the rig in freezing conditions.

The incident, which happened on the rig 100 miles south-east off the Aberdeen coast, occurred at around 9pm on Sunday night.

A spokesperson for the Aberdene Coastguard told The Press and Journal: “We were called to assist police at about 9pm following reports of a man who had fallen overboard from an offshore installation.

“We had a helicopter as well as lifeboat vessels dispatched. The incident is still ongoing and crews are still out at sea.”
