Joe Lycett appears to have shredded £10,000 live on his website after calling out David Beckham for endorsing the World Cup in Qatar. Dressed in a tasselled, rainbow-coloured jacket, the comedian could be seen throwing what appeared to be £5,000 into a red shredder, before destroying the second £5,000. Mr Lycett has been counting down to Sunday, when the opening ceremony in Qatar will take place, since his announcement, posting a picture of a shredder on his Twitter page on Friday alongside the caption “48 hours to go”. He also sent an email to Mr Beckham’s PR on Wednesday after the former England international failed to respond to his request, saying “there’s still time for David and his team to do the right thing”.
Hosted on his website benderslikebeckham.com, the Birmingham comic could be seen in a bare, dark room.
On a table in front of the camera was a large stack of cash, believed to be £10,000, as the comedian had promised, and behind was a red shredder.
Mr Lycett appeared on camera a few seconds after the midday deadline and threw the money into the shredder in two attempts.
After the money had been destroyed, he faced the camera, curtseyed and, in silence, walked out of the shot.
