The Crown’s recreation of Princess Diana’s infamous ‘revenge dress’ was one of the most highly anticipated moments of the new series.

But while viewers were blown away by the costume design team’s take on the Christina Stambolian black ruched mini dress, a jeweller has blasted their version of the Princess’ pearl necklace.

Earlier this month, TikTok user Rebecca – who runs the Paris-based business Petit Coeur Jewellery Box – claimed that she ‘couldn’t help but chuckle’ when she saw the necklace in the fifth episode of the new series.

In a viral video that’s racked up over two million views, Rebecca blasted the Netflix adaption for zooming in on the lobster clasp at the back of the necklace – something the expert claims Diana’s wouldn’t have had.

She fumed: ‘When The Crown wants you to believe that Princess Diana’s clasp for her ‘revenge necklace’ would ever be like this.

‘As a jewelery specialist, I’m not sure if it was the lobster clasp or the multiple option chain that did it for me more.’

The expert then went on to point out how Diana’s pearl choker – which featured a sapphire that was formerly part of one of Queen Mary’s brooches – had been made perfectly to measure.

She added: ‘The real necklace went seamlessly around her neck and the clasp would have been at the front.’

Although Rebecca says the overall look of the necklace was passable, she agreed with commenters that the clasp made the replica instantly look ‘cheap’.

She added: ‘The Crown did an amazing job but I just don’t know why they thought a close up feature was a good idea.’

And Rebecca wasn’t the only one who spotted the costume department’s oversight.

One TikToker replied: ‘I was thinking the same ! That’s not a pretty clasp, so why doing a close up?’

Another added: ‘Someone in the wardrobe department is seething right now.’

‘Thank you! That was driving me crazy,’ a third said. ‘Really? A lobster clasp on a Diane’s iconic family necklace?’

Meanwhile, a fourth joked: ‘I thought the same thing! I was like… did they buy this at Claire’s? Party city?!’

‘THANK GOD I WASNT CRAZY FOR THINKING THAT IT MADE THE NECKLACE LOOK CHEAP,’ a fifth said.

However, the dress recreation went down a storm with viewers when the trailer for the new Netflix trailer dropped last month.

Sharing side-by-side images of Diana and The Crown recreation, one user gushed: ‘NETFLIX IS NOT PLAYING AT ALL.’

Another added: ‘DIANA IN THEE REVENGE DRESS HOLY FFFF.’

Using fire emojis in response to the recreated dress, a third said: ‘Give Elizabeth her Emmy.’

On June 29, 1992, the King’s BBC documentary Prince Charles: The Private Man, the Public Role aired to the public in an effort to restore his reputation following his divorce.

During the infamous interview, the monarch admitted to journalist Jonathan Dimbleby that he had been unfaithful in his marriage – but only once it had ‘irretrievably broken down’.

In a 1997 Vogue article, Princess Diana’s close friend Anna Harvey revealed that she originally feared the mini black dress was ‘too daring’ and planned on wearing a Valentino design to the event.

But after finding out about her ex-husband’s documentary, the insider claimed Diana wanted to ‘look like a million dollars’ on the difficult evening.
